The Travesty of Flash Game Packs

flashgames2.jpg

What’s a flash game pack? Well, typically it’s a zip file that consists of anywhere between 1000-3000, ranging from $30 – $100 in price. It consists of a selection of freely distributed flash games, many of which are free to download on other sites if you can be bothered hunting for them.

Once you’ve picked your games pack, you download the swf files and thumbnail images, upload them to your server, paste the Mysql code into your database and voila! You now have an arcade script full of games. Pretty straight forward right? Wrong.

There are so many pitfalls in acquiring game packs that it’s almost worth hunting down individual games and building your own pack from scratch. Ok doing that and reaching 3000 games could take you more than a year’s work, but at least you can assert a minimum of quality control over your choices. To break down the argument of why flash game packs are in my opinion a web travesty, here’s a list of problems that I’ve encountered first hand after purchasing 3 different game packs (note that one of those was bundled with an arcade script):

1. What’s on the lid is not what’s in the box.

2. At least 10% of games are either duplicates or dysfunctional.

3. At least 50% of games are sub-standard quality – meaning you or I wouldn’t go near them with a barge pole.

4. Random titling of SWF files and thumbnail images.

5. Thumbnail images are all too often indiscernible.

6. Many of the games are available for free on other sites and have been distributed under licensing that stipulates a non-profit agreement.

7. Rarely is any notion of copyright upheld by the game pack distributor, making monetized distribution of game packs a highly questionable practice.

8. Downloading and uploading 3000 games can take the best part of a day.

9. Using these game packs on your arcade does not guarantee success for your arcade. I suspect that if anything it has a negative impact because it establishes sub-standard quality across your arcade web site.

So what’s the solution? Well obviously there isn’t just one solution, but there are a number of steps webmasters can take to raise standards across the industry. First of all only buy game packs that are itemized, with an inventory that allows you to get a clear overview of what you’re buying. The less people buy crap, the less crap will be marketed for profit.

Secondly, if you are thinking of launching your own games pack, start as you mean to go on by making sure that all the games are subject to proper licensing agreements and that all games are in working order and adhere to the basic quality guidelines that come with common sense. Advertise your games pack with a quality disclaimer.

The third strategy has already been mentioned: make your own games pack from freely distributed games. This is something I have been doing myself. I’m at about 200 games now and I have in mind to release it for free when it gets to 500. I have some basic knowledge of licensing agreements for the distribution of flash games, but if anyone has any ‘official’ or more extensive information on this I would be grateful if you could post it in a comment here or contact me through the contact form. Also, let me know what your experience with game packs has been. What changes would you make? It’s always a pleasure to hear from readers.

                That Zombie thing

                zombies1.jpg

Being a games arcade webmaster means inevitably visiting other people’s arcades, not only do you get a sense of your own lacunae but you can often find the answer to the single most important question plaguing all webmasters: where do I get great new free games for my site from? You visit other arcades, you play games and you watch for the ‘download this game for free’ link when you’re doing it.

As part of this process, I came across a couple of games that caught my attention recently. They may not be new in terms of their release dates, but they strike me as being part of a much sought after games genre: Zombie Games. For those of you who are too impatient to read this post in its entirety, here’s a list of some plausible Zombie candidates to keep you satisfied.

The two games I had in mind are ‘The Last Stand‘ (if anyone has the flash file for this please let me know, I’m dying to get my hands on it!) and ‘13 Days in Hell‘. Yes, I know the titles sound like splatterpunk cult movies and I wouldn’t mind betting that the game developers were on a diet of Hellraiser, Evil Dead, Slayer and Slipknot when they were designing these games. Both games are pretty well designed and they both operate on around the premise of ‘one man against the world’. As you progress through the levels you earn cash which allows you to buy new weapons at the end of each day. You have to work out how much ammunition to buy and which guns to choose from. The rest is point, shoot and large pools of blood.

So what is it about the Zombie genre in games and movies that fascinates us? Well to answer that question you want to peruse a few auspicious papers such as Daniel C. Dennett’s ‘The Unimagined Preposterousness of Zombies‘ or Tim Cavanaugh’s ‘We the Living Dead‘ for example, then again you might not.

Personally I think there is a perverse sense of romance at play with Zombies. Aside from the fact that Zombies are usually portrayed as sub human, with rotting flesh, poor maneuverability and a voracious appetite for fresh bodies, it is the idea that you have been lucky enough to escape the plague. You are ‘the chosen one’, the ultimate hero, the world is in your hands and you are the only remaining perfect specimen of human kind to restore the balance between good and evil…fortunately there is usually a rather sexy female companion that pops up sooner or later. It’s the 28 Days scenario. It’s the heroes journey, down into the underworld to seek atonement with the forces of evil and back up, emerging as victor, liberator.

So there you have it, I think Zombie games are all about fulfilling your fantasies; not only do you get to prove your self worth, your integrity and your heroism but of course your reward is to go forth and proliferate the gene pool. In many ways it’s a return to that image of the garden of Eden.

What’s your take on this whole Zombie thing?

                The Link Experiment (Part 2)

You are reading the second part to my link experiment. For the first part see here. So I’ve already begun submitting my arcade site to some of the 200+ directories listed in the first part of this experiment. I’ve covered page rank 6 and 5 and I’m half way through the PR4 list.

Below is an outline of what I intend to gain from doing all this. While I’m calling this an ‘experiment’, I am under no illusion that this is far from scientific and any results will be judged as mere indicators of potential rather than facts. So with that in mind here’s what and how I’m doing it:

                Experiment aims

So here are the experiment aims in a nutshell:

                1. To discern whether directory submission is an effective means of driving traffic traffic to a new website.

                2. To test the potential for revenue enhancement.

                3. To pinpoint the best directories on my list of 200+

                4. To provide insight and understanding of SEO for new website owners

The four stages of the experiment

                1. 10th December 2007: Within a 24 hour period, I will submit my site, www.fingermonkey.net to all the sites in the list of 200+ web link directories.

                2. 10th January 2008: First stage of analysis. It will have been exactly one month since the beginning of the experiment, some of my links won’t have even been reviewed at this point, but it will be a good time to take stock of where things are at.

                3. 10th February 2008: Two months will have passed and many of the links should be working by this stage. I will do a write up with some traffic analysis using google analytics. I will also show what impact it has had on the 3 google adsense banners on the arcade site.

                4. 10th March 2008: This will be the last stage in the experiment. Time to assess which directory sites yielded the most traffic. At this stage I will use all the data I have collected to update my 200+ list of directories to include annotations on best SEO potential.

Tools to carry out the experiment

                1. Online form filler tool

In order to make stage 1 (submission to over 200 directories) less of a nail-biter, I’m going to use the following free online form filler tool, available for download here.

                dirsubmit.gif

This will allow me to fill out my arcade site’s info once and automatically paste it in for each new directory submission, cutting time in half and making the whole process more bearable.

                2. Google analytics

In order to measure my arcade site’s traffic statistics I will be using Google Analytics. There are a number of free web analytics tools available but of all the ones I’ve tried google comes packed with the most features and offers the cleanest layout.

                The Link Experiment (Part 1)

When you’ve just built a new site, one of the first concerns is how to get people to come and see all the amazing work you’ve been doing. One of the more popular ways to start pushing your site above the surface and on to the radar is by submitting it to web directories. But as with most things in life, the top prizes come at top prices. There is however, a multitude of free directories waiting for you to submit your url.

If you google ‘free web directories’ for example, you’ll find a query list of universal proportion. So not only do you have to contend with the sheer quantity of directories out there, but on top of that you have to embark on a process of weeding the good from the bad, sorting the reputable sites from the viral spam sites.

Today, I’m going to make that process much easier for you because below is a list, in descending order by page rank and alphabet, of some of the web’s better directories. It goes from the ubiquitous dmoz.org to the lesser known, though nonetheless noble, LinkPrestige.com.

What I aim to do over the coming days is to submit my new games arcade site to all of these directories. It will be an extremely laborious task but I have devised a submission method to alleviate some of the pain. I will share that method with you in part two of this directory link experiment. The overall aim of the experiment is to try and get a sense of what relevance and what impact submitting links to directories has on a new site. I will be posting details of the experiment in part 2 over the coming days so stay tuned if you’re interested.

If you decide to submit to any of the links below please leave a comment here about your experience and of course if you happen across a dead link or a directory is no longer running, please also point it out here. Thanks for reading and happy submissions!

                Arcade Site Stats Nov-Dec 07

This is the first in a series of monthly site statistics reviews where I’ll be taking a look at FingerMonkey.net visitor activity and hopefully seeing a steady growth. It will be a chance to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the site and an opportunity for readers to get first hand insight into the reality of developing a flash arcade from the bottom up.

This first series of stats is for the period of the 2nd of November to the 2nd of December 2007. I have included screenshots from google analytics, a must have free analytics tool for any serious webmaster. I will mark up some thoughts on each screenshot and then leave it open for reader comments and analysis on anything I have overlooked or misread, please let me know if there are other areas of site statistics that you’d be interested in viewing.

I should also point out that while google analytics is a rigorous piece of software that tells me everything about my visitors right down to what colour their underwear is, I recognize that statistics are really only an indication of a site’s trends and cannot be substitutes for the real markers of esteem: public opinion. It’s very easy to focus solely on stats as a means to assessing how successful a site is. To apply this approach alone would, in my opinion, be a mistake. So take it with a pinch of salt!

Rather than go through all the stats step by step, I’ll let you look at them for yourselves and I’ll only comment on the parts that I find significant. So in this overview what strikes me most is two things. First of all the obvious and gradual increase in visitors to the site over the one month period (please bear in mind that this is FingerMonkey’s first month in existence!) from 2 unique visits on Nov 2nd to 28 on Dec 2nd.

The second thing that I find interesting is the average time spent on site which amounts to about 13 minutes. 13 minutes in web time is actually quite long and I’m surprised, it means that users are clearly getting stuck into some gaming. What I’d be interested to find out is whether by lifting the current 50 token limit (5 tokens per game play) on unregistered visitors, I’d see an increase in time spent on the site. Then to find out whether more time spend playing mean more chance of clicking on ads and thus more revenue. This is something I’m going to experiment with.

                traffic-sources-small-nov-d.gif

Right, so here we have a breakdown of sources of traffic of which nearly half is being generated by search engines (Google: 127 visits | Yahoo: 31 visits) and nearly a third by referring sites. Top referring sites are the two main arcade forums I frequent: Talk Arcades and ArcadeWebmasters. Other points of interest are search engine keywords. The words ‘Finger Monkey’ have the most searches which is a very good sign since it means that at least some of those 65 will have been people who remembered the name of the arcade. Getting the name and the image of the arcade into visitors minds is crucial to nurture returning and loyal visitors.

That’s it for this month. Next month I’ll be able to begin a few early comparisons. Stats will get more and more interesting as time goes by, but also more complex.
